The Piétonnier

  • The Piétonnier is a pedestrian zone and, therefore, it's car-free by principle. However, certain exceptions apply:

    • Permanent access: an electronic badge that allows you to open the barrier and/or a vehicle pass (to be placed on the windshield).

    • Temporary access: a code (numerical code that you can enter on the barrier display in order to open it) and/or a vehicle pass.

    • Loading and unloading vehicles: if road signs at the place allow so, vehicles are authorized to load and unload between 4 a.m. and 11 a.m.

    • Cyclists: if road signs at the place allow so, and as long as they move at walking pace.

    • Taxis: taxis are authorized on the Piétonnier if road signs at the place indicate that they are allowed to pick up or drop off passengers (provided that they obtained a code issued every two years by the Citizen Affairs Department – Traffic Unit). For taxis established in the Brussels-Capital Region, the codes are transmitted via the external site of the regional taxi directorate

    • Priority vehicles: (ambulances, fire and police vehicles, etc.) listed in Article 37 of the Code de la Route (Road Code), equipped with flashing blue lights and audible alarms.

    • Vehicles for surveillance, control and maintenance of the pedestrian zone and vehicles assigned to collect rubbish.

    • Public transport vehicles.

  • Permanent access

    • Users of a public parking lot or a private garage (subject to obtaining a vehicle pass and/or electronic badge issued by the Citizen Affairs Department – Traffic Unit – there is a maximum of 2 passes and/or badges issued per parking spot).
      Required documents: ID card, license plate registration certificate and proof of ownership or lease of garage.

    • Vehicles belonging to commercial companies whose main office is located in the pedestrian zone and whose main activity is delivery, subject to obtaining a badge and/or pass issued by the Citizen Affairs Department – Traffic Unit.
      Required documents: ID card, license plate registration certificate, certificate specifying the company's main activity and a document proving the location of the company's business.

    • Carriages that obtain a pass and/or electronic badge issued by the Citizen Affairs Department – Traffic Unit.
      Required documents: ID card and authorization from the Collège – Trade cell.

    • Bicycle cabs authorized by the Collège that possess a pass and/or electronic badge issued by the Citizen Affairs Department – Traffic Unit.
      Required documents: ID card and Collège authorization.

    • Drivers of vehicles used for healthcare or home-care activities who have an INAMI code and have obtained a pass and/or electronic badge issued by the Citizen Affairs Department – Traffic Unit.
      Required documents: ID card, license plate registration certificate and INAMI registration certificate.

    • People with reduced mobility and senior citizens over 65 living in the pedestrian zone that obtained a pass and/or badge issued by the Citizen Affairs Department – Traffic Unit.
      Required documents: ID card, vehicle registration card and document proving disability, if applicable.

    • Market gardeners and itinerant traders who periodically or permanently operate in the pedestrian zone, and who have obtained prior approval from the City of Brussels Commerce Department to occupy the public space, subject to obtaining a pass and/or electronic badge issued by the Citizen Affairs Department – Traffic Unit.
      Required documents: ID card, registration card and certificate from the Commerce Department.

    Temporary access

    • Customers using a parking lot or garage assigned to an establishment. Establishments providing their customers with a garage or parking spot within the pedestrian zone, subject to the possession of a 24-hour pass and/or code issued by the Citizen Affairs Department – Traffic Unit.
      Required documents: ID card, company statutes and proof of ownership or rental of garage.

    • People getting married at the Town Hall, including horse-drawn vehicles, subject to obtaining a pass issued by the Citizen Affairs Department – Wedding Unit.
      Required documents: ID card and wedding announcement. Please note! The Wedding Unit issues passes for access to the Grand-Place only.

    • Drivers of hearses who obtained a code and a vehicle pass issued by the Citizen Affairs Department – Declaration of Death Unit. Required documents: ID card and declaration of death.

    • Drivers of vehicles at events authorized by the Collège, subject to obtaining a code and/or pass issued by the Citizen Affairs Department – Traffic Unit.
      Required documents: authorization from the Collège – event cell.

    • Drivers of vehicles used for moving out that obtained a code and/or pass issued by the Citizen Affairs Department – Traffic Unit.
      Required documents: ID card and license plate registration certificate.

    • Vehicles intended to carry out work in the pedestrian zone, provided they obtained a code and/or pass issued by the Citizen Affairs Department – Traffic Unit.
      Required documents: supporting documents from the Police, Urban Development or Public and Green Spaces Departments, depending on the kind of the work to be done.

    • State visitors, security staff, urgent and exceptional cases, provided that they possess a code issued by the Traffic Police

    • Cases not covered above but requiring access to the pedestrian zone must be specifically approved by the Collège des Bourgmestre et Echevins de la Ville de Bruxelles.

    • Validity: vehicle passes are valid for 2 years (renewable) for those granted with permanent access, and valid for variable periods of time for those with temporary access.

    • Prices: passes are free of charge. In the event of loss or theft, duplicate passes are subject to a charge (€10).

    The granting of electronic badges is subject to a refundable deposit of €50, non-refundable, in the event of theft or loss.
