Description
The planting of the May tree or the tree of joy (Meyboom or Meiboom) is a popular event typical of Brussels, dating back to the 13th century. It celebrates a Brussels victory over the Louvanistes in 1213. To respect the tradition, the tree of joy must be planted before 5 p.m. on D-Day, at the corner of rue des Sables and rue du Marais.
The Meyboom has been recognized by Unesco as part of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. This event always takes place on August 9.
